Originating in Cleveland in 1922, Sweetest Day was created by Herbert Birch Kingston, a candy company employee who wanted to bless orphans and shut-ins by distributing candy and treats to them. Even in the midst of the Great Depression, Kingston was able to bring happiness to people whom society had forgotten. The idea for Galentine's Day was first proposed in a 2010 episode of NBC's Parks and Recreation when main character Leslie Knope took all of her ladies out to a long lunch and gave them gifts the day before Valentine's Day.
