There are many people in our lives that we tend to take for granted – and at work, the dedicated work of administrative professionals is often overlooked. That is, of course, until they take a day off! Truth be told, our support personnel, whether answering phones or managing databases, are the ones that keep the business running smoothly day to day, which is why having an opportunity to thank them is so important! Administrative Professionals Week has evolved over the years – and grown to encompass not only secretaries but all of the people on our team, the unsung heroes that we could not do without.
At that time, support personnel was needed across America; and National Secretaries Day was established to encourage people to join the field. Of course, ideas and terminology have changed; and with numbers ranging up to 9 million, the ranks of the administrative support professional is a force to be reckoned with. Today, the International Association of Administrative Professionals offers continuing education and networking opportunities; and works across the globe to set standards of excellence for the industry.
Recent studies have shown that the majority of employees think that the administrative personnel are more important to daily operations than the boss. A non-formal social media poll asked the admins themselves to describe their daily duties in a few words; answers included miracle worker, concierge, and therapist. Many employees believe the admins know more about their day than even their spouse. With administrative professionals experiencing such unprecedented influence at the company, having their own day to show appreciation just makes sense.

Secretaries Week is observed annually doing the last full week of April. This year, it will land between Sunday, April 19 and Saturday, April 25. The week focuses on showing appreciation to members of your administrative staff. It is customary for the boss to give out gifts such as flowers, candy, prepaid lunches, and even time off.
The origin of this holiday started in 1952, when the president of the National Secretaries Association, Mary Barrett and C. King Woodbridge, the president of the Dictaphone Corporation wanted to address the shortage of office workers as well as shine a light upon the individuals who were the key players to keeping companies running smoothly.
Later that year, National Secretaries Week was declared an official holiday by U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Charles Sawyer. This event kept evolving to include recognition for all members of the administrative support staff so in the year 2000, the name Administrative Professionals Week was created.
If you have people that utilize their skills to keep your business operating proficiently, give out tokens to express how much you value them. Beautiful flowers and gifts are one of the best ways to show your gratitude.
