Botanists have cultivated carnations in Asia and Europe for two centuries. During that time, they’ve identified 300 unique species and created hundreds of different hybrids. The botanical name for the carnation is Dianthus caryophyllus. Dianthus is Greek for “flower of the Gods.” The earliest carnations had pink blooms, and the common name for which the nickname is “carn” means “flesh toned.” Carnations are referred to as Clove Pink or Gillyflower because of the spicy scent they emit.
