Is there a particular person in your life who has a birthday in January? If there is, why not consider giving them a gift of flowers, using the birth flower for January, which is the carnation? The Gordon Boswell floral design team is always eager to help our customers create arrangements for any occasion or choose one of our existing designs.
Botanists have cultivated carnations in Asia and Europe for two centuries. During that time, they’ve identified 300 unique species and created hundreds of different hybrids. The botanical name for carnation is Dianthus caryophyllus. Dianthus is Greek for “flower of the Gods.” The earliest carnations had pink blooms, and the common name for which the nickname is “carn” means “flesh toned.” Carnations are referred to as Clove Pink or Gillyflower because of the spicy scent they emit.
Carnations can represent many sentiments, including:
Flower colors are also connected with special meanings.
- Red always represents passionate love
- White symbolizes pure love, but it can also suggest innocence and steadfastness.
- Yellow is a sign of disdain or a romantic rejection.
- Purple is a nod to a person’s capricious or whimsical nature.
- A striped carnation conveys a sense of regret that someone feels over unrequited love.
We decided to showcase some of our favorite floral arrangements that use carnations so that you can get some ideas for those January birthday recipients for whom you need to buy gifts.
Send festive birthday greetings to a co-worker, a colleague, an employee or a friend with our Birthday Explosion. We combine red carnations with yellow daisies, orange roses, alstroemeria and purple status and place the flowers in a lovely cobalt blue vase. We attach a blue mylar birthday balloon so the message will come across loud and clear.
You don’t have to be a car buff to appreciate this delightful keepsake ‘48 Ford Pickup Truck. The blue truck is filled with dark red carnations, yellow daisies, orange roses, and purple status. We add oregonia as an accent and to give the arrangement a polished look. It isn’t surprising that a flower arrangement would come in a keepsake replica of an antique truck since Texans are faithful to the saying that everything is bigger here and so are their vehicles.
Celebrate those January birthdays with floral gifts that include carnations.
