Flowers have always been the #1 gift for Mother’s Day, and for good reason. Throughout the centuries, flowers have taken on meanings far beyond just their beauty, and represented sentiments such as love, gratitude, and wisdom. If your Mom has been a guiding force in your life, always there for you and always full of love, Gordon Boswell has the floral designs that will let her know how much you appreciate her. There is an arrangement for every mom and every personality. May 14 is Mother’s Day, and we can’t wait to honor our moms!
Statistics tell us that there are over 85 million moms in the United States. Which one is the world’s best mother? The one you call Mom, of course! On May 14, we give Mom all of the love and admiration that she deserves. There will be many gifts given on that day, but none are more classic or traditional than the gift of flowers. People have been honoring the matriarchs of the family with flowers since ancient times, but it wasn’t until 1908 that Mother’s Day was formally introduced in the United States as an official holiday.
Gordon Boswell has been helping Fort Wort residents celebrate their moms for nearly 100 years, and we have the perfect flowers to say “I love you” on this special day. Continue reading
When we think of Mothers’ Day, we think of gifts and cards, brunches and of course, flowers. But the origins of this day to honor our mothers has its roots in far more serious issues, and the efforts of some very driven women to change the world for the better.
In the 1850’s and early 1860’s, a woman in West Virginia named Ann Reeves Jarvis formed women’s clubs to tackle some of the more daunting social issues of the day. The issues revolved around the health of children; the women worked to provide sanitary conditions for child care and to lower infant mortality rates by fighting prevalent diseases and decreasing milk contamination. As the Civil War raged, these groups also tended to the wounded soldiers from both the Confederate and Union armies. When the war ended, mothers from both sides united to mourn the deaths of their sons and husbands; and they called their gatherings “Mothers’ Friendship Days.”
Ann Jarvis’ daughter was inspired her to organize the first Mothers’ Day observances in 1908, as a reaction to her mother’s death three years earlier. So on May 10, families attended local events in Jarvis’s hometown of Grafton, West Virginia as well as in Philadelphia. Primarily through Jarvis’s initiative, Mothers’ Day became more and more popular until U.S. President Woodrow Wilson officially designated the second Sunday in May in 1914 for the holiday.

Just about any flower type can be a good choice for Mother’s Day gift giving. Flowers innately exude an energy of positivity and love, and sending flowers to Mom on Mother’s Day is a guaranteed way to lift her spirits. If you’re not sure what color flowers to send your Mom, consider these suggestions.
1. Maroons and Purples
Purple, maroon and burgundy are royal colors that can make Mom feel like the Queen she is. Sending flowers in this color scheme will almost invariably get a strong positive reaction, as most Moms love the color purple. Roses, daisies, violets, orchids and lilies are all available in various shades of purple, so consider one of those flower types or a mixed bouquet of several.
2. Reds and Burgundies
Red is the color of deep love, and no Mom wouldn’t be touched by receiving a bouquet of red, burgundy or deep pink flowers. Red roses are a classic, but the color red is also suited to tulips, carnations, daisies and orchids.
3. Pink and Salmon Tones
If your Mom favors highly feminine tones, then pink flowers are the gift to give. There are a range of pink colors and flowers she would love to receive, from roses to lilies, orchids, carnations and many other flower types. Consider an all-pink bouquet or one mixed with white and ivory flowers as well.
4. Orange and Melon Colors
Orange exudes a happy, joyful energy and could be the perfect way to change up the color palette if you’ve given more traditional choices in recent years.
5. Radiant Yellows
If Mom is in need of a burst of positive energy this year, consider sending her a bouquet of yellow flowers. Roses, sunflowers, daisies and even orchids are available in yellow, so why not send a bouquet of sunshine her way?
